Instigate NYC is an actively anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-oppression group. What does that mean? It means that we actively seek presenters and participants that are marginalized in the (mostly) hetero-normative, white, appropriative, economically privileged BDSM communities. We seek trans and gender non conforming people to teach. We seek people of color to teach. We seek people of varying abilities to teach. (And so on.) We believe that the voices that are rarely heard in mainstream spaces ought to be. All of our events are sliding scale. This is because of our commitment to include people regardless of economic privilege.
We welcome people of ALL genders, orientations and cultures to attend. However if you are one of the folks who is not at the margins (PoC, trans, queer, disabled, etc.) you must be someone who is interested in working at being an ally to those folks. If you're not working on it, this group is not right for you. Working to be an ally includes actively interrupting oppressive behavior. We're working to create safer space to learn and engage in. In order for the space to be safe for those who are often marginalized, people at the center must be willing to relinquish privilege. To sometimes feel uncomfortable. To sit with it. Instigate is created and led by queer, trans, PoC perverts. We believe that our experiences in those identities inform our acknowledgement of power dynamics and the ways that we play with those dynamics. Want to read more, or need some definitions?
